Study: The Impact of Telecommuting on Performance
Confidential
A study on how telecommuting impacts employee performance, including results from an employee sample across 3 organizations.
About
In Fall 2020, I was approached by one of my graduate school professors to work with an organization as a consultant, performing research and conducting a small pilot study to examine the impact of telecommuting on work performance.
Societal events, including COVID-19 and the pandemic, were driving operational changes in the workplace. The client requested to work with an external consultant to provide an evidence-based perspective on telecommuting, in order to determine if it may be a feasible long-term solution for their organization.
Challenge
As part of the project, it was necessary not only to work with internal stakeholders but also to partner with external organizations who would allow access to a sample of their employee population. Additionally, it was necessary to work within quarantine parameters and to send all communications, including the study survey, via email. Finally, it required tracking and ensuring the confidentiality and security of all feedback.
Action
In order to ensure that I was providing evidence-based information to the client, I performed significant empirical and experiential research to inform both the study and the subsequent presentation with recommendations.
From there, I connected with external contacts to secure 3 organizations needed to collect data for the study. I also designed and administered the survey, tracked and maintained response data, performed all analyses, and developed the presentation above, as well as a written consulting brief.
Result
The research and study results were presented to the client along with the written brief, and the recording above provided for stakeholders who were unable to attend the live virtual presentation.
